General Questions

Q How do I join my Voyage?

You can either make your own way to the port or airport. Alternatively, to make your arrangements easier why not take advantage of our CruiseConnect Programme, with its comprehensive range of coach and air services, port and aiport parking. Find out more by clicking here

Q If I’m travelling alone, how will I meet people?

It couldn’t be easier to meet people on board your ship. Not only are you cordially invited to a welcome cocktail party for all our guests, you might also want to consider joining a larger table for dinner in order to get to know more of your fellow voyagers. On board activities like classes and quizzes are a great way to make new friends. For ladies travelling alone, there are gentlemen hosts on board to accompany you in a waltz or rumba.

Q How will I get my bearings on board?

A ship is no different to any other resort you may not be familiar with. So to help you get your bearings on board, there’s a ship’s plan in your stateroom, plus further plans at convenient locations throughout the ship showing you where you are. If you do get lost, a member of the crew will be only too happy to help!

Q How much luggage can I bring?

There are no restrictions on how much luggage you can take aboard ship, but do remember that if your Voyage involves a flight, airlines have their own baggage allowance restrictions.

Q What do I wear on board during the day?

You'll need to pack a range of summer or warmer clothes, depending on your itinerary and the time of year you travel. On board, during the day, you'll probably find yourself most comfortable in casual wear or swimwear. In the ships' main restaurants attire for breakfast and lunch is casual wear (excluding shorts). In the King's Court on Queen Mary 2, and in the Lido Cafe on Queen Victoria, casual attire (including shorts) may be worn.

Q What about shore attire?

Be comfortable but please remember to respect the cultural dress norms of your hosts when visiting shrines, temples and churches. A lightweight raincoat and umbrella never go amiss! Finally, a pair of comfortable walking shoes (plus a spare pair of glasses) will always stand you in good stead.

Q Do I have to dress for dinner every evening?

One of the great thrills of a Cunard cruise is the sheer glamour of the evenings. Generally, evening dress may be either formal, informal or casual when your ship is at sea, and informal or casual when your ship is in port. There will be a maximum of three formal nights in a week. Evening attire, effective from 6pm, will be specified in your ship’s Daily Programme, delivered to your stateroom each day. Dress codes are defined as follows:

Formal:
Black tie or formal dark suit for men. Evening dress or other formal attire for women.
Informal:
Jacket and tie for men. Cocktail dress or trouser suit for women. No jeans.
Elegant Casual:
Jacket, no tie required for men (no jeans or shorts). Dress, skirt or trousers for ladies.

Q What does single-seating dining mean?

It means there is just the one sitting for dinner, and guests can choose to dine at their reserved table anytime between 7 and 9pm. The Britannia Restaurant on Queen Mary 2 and Queen Victoria offer a choice of an early or a late sitting for dinner, which should be requested at the time of booking.

Q Am I right in thinking that the stateroom grade I choose determines where I eat?

Only in respect of your formal dining arrangements. On both Queen Mary 2 and Queen Victoria, your accommodation is paired with a specific restaurant.

Both ships offer alternative dining options available to everyone: Kings Court, Boardwalk Cafe, Golden Lion & Todd English Restaurant on Queen Mary 2 and the Lido Cafe, Golden Lion & Todd English Restaurant on Queen Victoria.

Q What is the currency on board and how do I pay for items I buy?

Currency on board all ships is the US dollar, and you'll find the Purser's Office acts as a handy financial centre. You don’t need to take cash, as all shipboard purchases are charged to your on-board account. You can settle your account by credit card or using traveller’s cheques. To make life easier, we recommend you register your credit card at embarkation. You can exchange cash and traveller’s cheques at the Purser’s Office for most currencies in use at ports of call. Please note that personal cheques cannot be cashed on board our ships.

Q What about tipping?

During your voyage, you will receive excellent service from many members of our staff in a variety of locations. Additionally, many more crew behind the scenes support those who serve you directly. For your convenience, a Hotel and Dining charge will be automatically added to your shipboard account on a daily basis.

The Hotel and Dining charge will be shared amongst those staff that helped provide and support your voyage experience, including the waiter staff, stateroom stewards and accommodations staff, buffet stewards, and others. Please note this is a discretionary charge which, should you wish to remove or make any adjustments, you may do so by contacting the Purser's Reception desk on board. Casino personnel do not share in the Hotel and Dining charge as not all guests utilise this service. Amounts vary by stateroom category as follows:

You can also enjoy a wide range of beauty treatments, including manicures and pedicures, at the Canyon Ranch SpaClub on Queen Mary 2 and the Cunard Royal Spa and Fitness Centre on Queen Victoria. Q Is there enough to do during days at sea?

Yes plenty! You’ll be amazed by just how much there is to do. From deck sports, friendly quizzes and dance classes to fascinating talks and terrific movies, there’s so much to choose from. Your ship’s Daily Programme (delivered daily to your stateroom) has full details of all the activities, events and entertainments happening each day. Just watching your chefs carve their fabulous ice sculptures on deck is an inspirational way to pass the time!

Q What if I feel seasick?

Don’t worry – your ship’s doctor is always on hand with a remedy. Seasickness is best countered nowadays with an injection or tablets, which should soon have you feeling shipshape again and settle you for the duration of your stay on board.

Q How will I know which shore excursions are available?

About 60 days before you sail, you will receive a mailing with full details regarding your voyage, including shore excursions available. These can be reserved before you travel by:

1) Telephoning chosen shore excursions through to Reservations on 0845 071 0300

2) Returning your shore excursion booking form that was included with the mailing.

Q What is a Guarantee Fare?

When you or your travel agent come to make a reservation you may be offered the guarantee of the stateroom grade, rather than a specific stateroom number. This is because we know from experience that a small number of guests will be compelled to cancel their arrangements, thus leaving the accommodation vacant. Accepting a guarantee means that you have a firm booking and can go ahead with your holiday plans in the same way as if you had accepted a specific stateroom number from the outset. When we allocate a stateroom number you can rest assured you will be given a stateroom of the type you have booked, or in some instances, of a higher rate, though it may be situated on a different deck to that shown on the deck plan for the grade guaranteed. The fare you have been quoted will, however, remain unchanged.

Q If I wish to stay in Southampton or London the night before or after my voyage, can you suggest a hotel?

Yes, we have negotiated special rates on your behalf at the Hilton Hotel in Southampton. The Chewton Glen Hotel in the New Forest (approx 45 minutes' drive from Southampton) also offers exclusive rates for Cunard guests. We also offer rates at three hotels in central London; The Millenium Hotel, Renaissance Chancery Court and The Goring Hotel.
